Chiropractic Trends Part 3

Keto Dieting

The term “Keto” is short for ketosis. When you or your patients are following “the ketogenic diet,” which has been around since the 1920s, the restriction of carbs (approximately 20–30 net grams per day, including grains, sugar, fruit, etc.) puts your body into “ketosis,” a metabolic state occurring when most of the body’s energy comes from ketone bodies rather than from glucose from carbs. This is in contrast to the glycolytic state most of us are usually in, where blood glucose provides most of the body’s energy.

By reducing carb intake and increasing consumption of healthy fats, which helps create a feeling of fullness, your body has less glucose available and is now forced to burn fat and produce ketones instead. Once the blood levels of ketones rise to a certain point, you reach ketosis. This state results in consistent, fairly rapid weight loss until your body reaches a desired weight.
