With the 2019 MLB season underway, here’s a little recap from what went on behind the scenes with the PBCS during the off-season.
The 2018 Baseball Winter Meetings (BWM) were eventful as the business of baseball was in full “swing,” even though the stadiums were mostly under snow. This is the time of year where trades and player transactions take place. Many of you will see programs on television like ESPN’s Baseball Tonight and MLB Network coverage too. If you can imagine a scenario of where Google and Disney meet baseball, well that would be the Winter Meetings. But what most people don’t see is what takes place during the first week of the BWMs. This is where the medical personnel from within professional baseball gather. Athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, team physicians, etc.: You name it, they’re here.
However, for the first time, chiropractic was invited by MLB to participate!
This is groundbreaking not just for the PBCS but for the chiropractic profession. Dr. Rick Bishop, Sonny Haight, and Alan Palmer presented to the MiLB Medical Coordinators. They discussed how CEPA was organized by Dr. Palmer and former MLB Head ATC, Mark Letendre, in the mid-1990s. CEPA was really where it all began. From there, the PBCS came to fruition in 2012.
Then an initiative was put in place a few years ago to include Minor League Baseball. The presentation was well received. Not only did this allow those in attendance to see the history of the PBCS, but they were informed of the extensive vetting process that we have created to help place qualified DCs on MiLB teams. The presentation was so well received that we were asked to present again in March to the Athletic Trainers (MLB and MiLB) during their annual spring training symposium! We’re beginning to make some serious head way! The discussion of inclusion in the next MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement has begun.
If you’re involved with baseball at any level, we really need YOU to be active in the PBCS if you are not already. The PBCS is no longer an afterthought but has become an integral fixture in training rooms throughout professional baseball. We are gaining acceptance. As one medical coordinator put it, “We consider you guys one of us now.” That speaks volumes from how far we’ve come. Four MLB teams who did not have a single affiliate utilizing chiropractic care in the past (one of which does not utilize it at the MLB level) have committed to work with the PBCS to fill their chiropractic needs now.
We still have a lot of work to do, but we surely have made some wonderful progress. We can and will make an impact, but we can do it more effectively with YOU.
