Since 1980, the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians™ (ACBSP™) has led the development of sports medicine certification and has managed a world-class credentialing process that ensures certified sports chiropractors meet competency standards to effectively work with and treat athletes and those engaged in athletic activities. In addition, the ACBSP™ offers continuing education and research seminars to facilitate the dissemination of the latest scientific knowledge, treatment trends, and best practices for patient care.
The ACBSP™ is the governing board for the Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician® (CCSP®) and
Diplomate American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians® (DACBSP®) certifications. Various accredited chiropractic colleges offer the curricula and training leading to qualification for taking the certification exams. The ACBSP™ governs the administration of the examinations and certifications. These certifications are designed for chiropractic doctors who want to specialize in chiropractic sports medicine.

Dr. Travis Maak’s practice is focused on sports medicine and arthroscopic treatment of the hip and knee. He is the Head Orthopaedic Team Physician for the Utah Jazz, Utah Stallions, Salt Lake City Stars, and Salt Lake Bees and Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah. Dr. Maak specializes in arthroscopic hip and knee preservation surgery. His research focuses on cartilage preservation and restoration of the hip and knee. Dr. Maak is originally from Salt Lake City and a graduate from Stanford University. He completed his medical school at Yale School of Medicine and surgical internship at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical College. His orthopedic surgery residency training occurred at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where he continued his training with a Fellowship in sports medicine. During his Fellowship, Dr. Maak served as an Assistant NFL Team Physician for the New York Football Giants.
GREG BAUER DC, DABCSP®, CSCS
Dr. Bauer is a sports-trained Doctor of Chiropractic, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach, and an Exercise Physiologist. Dr. Bauer was the 2002 valedictorian of New York Chiropractic College.
Dr. Bauer is published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise and has presented to the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Bauer completed his postceptorship at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, as clinical intern to the U.S. Congress. Dr. Bauer has presented to the National Institute of Health and the U.S. Senate on the role of chiropractic in modern health care. Dr. Bauer is a past professor at New York Chiropractic College, where he led courses in diagnosis and technique.
He has been a rotating volunteer provider for Team USA since 2013 and has completed multiple rotations at all three Olympic training centers. Dr. Bauer worked extensively with the Women’s National hockey team prior to the Sochi Olympic Games and has been traveling internationally with USA Archery and USA Water Polo for international competition for the past five years. Dr. Bauer most recently supported Team USA at both the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
STEVE CONWAY DC, DACBOH, JD
Dr. Conway is currently a partner with DeWitt LLP, a major 200-member Midwest law firm with offices in Madison, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis. Dr. Conway’s healthcare practice specializes in Medicare audit defense cases. Dr. Conway served on the Wisconsin Chiropractic Examining Board for close to a decade. He is a member of the BOD of NBCE and serves as its Vice President. Dr. Conway along with Dr. Michael Jacklitch worked with top levels of CMS and the Chief Medical Directors (CMD) from all of the Medicare Contractors across the United States for 5 years to develop a universal agreement related to chiropractic documentation for Medicare cases. The MACs then requested Dr. Conway and Dr. Jacklitch train their medical review service personnel on the mechanics of the documentation requirement agreement. This effort has resulted for the first time in history a transformative reduction in the chiropractic error ratio, resulting in the ability to legislate for full inclusion in payments for chiropractic services provided to Medicare beneficiaries. Dr. Conway has presented to thousands of chiropractors across the U.S. to help them fully understand compliance.
WILLIAM MOREAU DC, DACBSP®, CSCS, FACSM
Dr. Bill Moreau, DC, DACBSP, CSCS, is a chiropractic physician and conservative, evidence-based sports medicine clinician who started work with the USOC in 2009 after more than 25 years of private practice. He became the first Managing Director of Sports Medicine for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) in February of 2012. Prior to this promotion, Dr. Moreau worked at the USOC as the Director of Clinics.
Dr. Moreau develops the USOC Sports Medicine strategy and oversees all USOC sports medicine activities including Clinics, Games, and the USOC National Medical Network. In 18 months, Dr. Moreau developed the USOC National Medical Network representing $33M in services deployed across the U.S. Dr. Moreau served as the Medical Director for Team USA at the London 2012 Olympic Games where he managed the implementation of medical care to more than five hundred athletes as provided by more than 100 medical providers. He also served as the Medical Director for the Sochi 2014 Winter Games.
Dr. Moreau founded and advanced the application of integrated, multiple disciplinary musculoskeletal care through founded Fortis Cura, Inc., a healthcare company dedicated to advancing patient-centered care through the utilization and further development of evidence-based musculoskeletal care pathways. He has been featured in Bloomberg Business Week, USA Today, Time, ESPN, NPR, NBC, GE Healthcare News, Kaiser Health News, the USA Department of Health and Human Services Consumer Health IT Summit, Cleveland Clinic Innovation Summit, Army Strategic Studies Group, and the Allegany Healthcare Summit.
Dr. Moreau has successfully presented over 550 postgraduate presentations with a primary focus on sports medicine and musculoskeletal care throughout the United States and internationally. He has over 30 years of clinical expertise in both general practice and sports medicine. Sporting patient populations include Olympic, professional, collegiate, high school, and recreational athletes. Dr. Moreau is well published with a focus on evidence-based medicine and athletic injuries with an emphasis on the study of concussion in sport.
Dr. Moreau and his wife Karen live in Black Forest, Colorado. They have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and a yellow labrador.
DALE BUCHBERGER MS, PT, DC, CSCS, DACBSP®
He is a Diplomate and 3-time past-President of the ACBSP™. Dr. Buchberger currently serves as the official Chiropractic consultant for the Auburn Doubleday’s and Syracuse University Athletics. He is the strength and conditioning coordinator for the Auburn YMCA Stingrays swim program. He is the President of Active Physical Therapy Solutions PC. He was 2009 ACBSP™ Sports Chiropractor of the year.
ANDREW KLEIN MS, DC, DACBSP®
Dr. Andy Klein received a BA in Physical Education from Lehman College in 1981 and an MS Ed. in Exercise Physiology from Queens College in 1983. He received his chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College in 1987. He is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is board certified in Chiropractic Sports Medicine by the ACBSP™. Professional appointments include appointed chiropractor for the USA at the Goodwill Games in 1998 and the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia in 2000. He served as the team chiropractor for the Minnesota Vikings from 2002–2006. He developed the Physical Therapy 3 course, which emphasizes active care and rehabilitation, at Northwestern Chiropractic College and has instructed there since 1995. He teaches postgraduate education for multiple chiropractic colleges and has been practicing full-time in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at Park Nicollet Clinic since 1999.
SHERRY MCALLISTER MS (Ed), DC, CCSP®
Dr. Sherry McAllister, DC, MS (Ed) CCSP®, serves as the Executive Vice President for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, the national not-for-profit organization creating positive press for Chiropractic.
Dr. McAllister earned her Master’s in Education from the University of California East Bay and is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic West, where she served as an Associate Professor. She was recently appointed to Forbes Non-Profit Council. She is a frequent guest speaker for National conventions and Corporate Wellness Programs as well as Business and Healthcare Alliances.
Dr. McAllister has served as a Qualified Medical Examiner, Expert Chiropractic Witness for the State of California, and has been in private practice in San Jose since 1996.
ROBERT NELSON DC, DACBSP®
Dr. Robert Nelson graduated Cum Laude in 1986 from Logan College of Chiropractic. Dr. Nelson is a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (D.A.C.B.S.P.®). Postgraduate education also includes courses as a Fellow of the International Association of Clinical Acupuncture (F.I.A.C.A.), Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner (C.C.E.P.), Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.), Chiropractic Rehabilitation Diplomate Program, Certified Graston Technique, and Active Release Technique.
Dr. Nelson has taught postgraduate courses in Sports Medicine for The Palmer Institute for Professional Advancement, Northwestern Health Sciences University, Logan College of Chiropractic, ProSport Chiropractic, and the Colorado Chiropractic Association.
He has published articles in the Journal of Sports Chiropractic & Rehabilitation. Dr. Nelson has served several years on the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians as president and as a board of director. He has been the president of the Colorado Chiropractic Sports Council for the past six years. Athletes from Nike Youth Soccer to Pro Rodeo and Pro Soccer are among those treated by Dr. Nelson.
In 2004, Dr. Nelson was honored for the fourth time as Chiropractor of the Year by the Colorado Chiropractic Association as well as receiving his fourth award as Sports Chiropractor of the Year. He also maintains a webpage for his clinical services.
Dr. Lindsay Thornton, EdD, is a Senior Sport Psychophysiologist at the United States Olympic Committee. She has her Ed.M and Ed.D from Boston University in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in sport performance. She is licensed as a psychologist and is board certified in biofeedback and neurofeedback by BCIA. She has received postdoctoral training in sleep at UPenn. Dr. Thornton has developed, advised, and provided training for psychophysiology labs in elite athlete training centers domestically and abroad. She is intrigued by the prospect of identifying psychophysiological markers for elite performance and using technology and education to enhance sleep, recovery, and performance.
Recent speaking topics include tools to enhance the functioning of the elite brain, including the strategic use of sleep, exercise, neurofeedback, biofeedback, and brain stimulation for improving cognition, emotional regulation, and performance.
ANDREW J. SMITH
Dr. Andrew J. Smith is a tenure track instructor in the Department of Psychiatry and University Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of Utah School of Medicine and Staff Psychologist in Behavioral Medicine in the Salt Lake City VA Healthcare System. Following a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Army, Dr. Smith enrolled at Penn State where he completed his undergraduate degree in rehabilitation science followed by a Master’s degree in trauma psychology at the University of Colorado. He completed his PhD at Virginia Tech with emphases in stress and coping, neuropsychology, and quantitative research methods. His research and clinical practice focuses on individuals and communities exposed to trauma with over twenty peer-reviewed studies and chapters among survivors of childhood trauma, combat, mass violence, and natural disasters. He holds distinction as a Tillman Military Scholar.
