Evidence-Based Benefits of Green Tea and Moringa

There are many reasons to consume green tea and moringa, so I thought I would list out the most popular evidence-based ones.

Everyone is familiar with green tea but not so much with moringa. Moringa comes from a tree that is often nicknamed the Horseradish Tree because of the sharp flavor. Moringa is known to have many medicinal uses and potential health benefits, and one of the easiest ways to obtain the benefits is by using a product that combines it together with green tea.

With that in mind, let me provide several of the most evidence-based uses of these two valuable nutrients.

Weight Loss

First, one of the most referenced benefits, although probably not the most significant clinical reason, is the fact that green tea and moringa have been shown to increase fat burning. When you look at the ingredients list for any fat burning supplement, chances are green tea and moringa will be on there. This is because according to research, green tea and moringa can increase fat burning by boosting a patient’s metabolic rate.1

A study involving 10 healthy men taking green tea extract showed that it increased the number of calories burned by 4 percent. Another study showed that it increased fat oxidation by 17 percent when compared to a placebo.2

Reduce Inflammation

Another significant health benefit is that both green tea and moringa contain healthy bioactive compounds such as polyphenols that have been shown to reduce inflammation.

Green tea contains a catechin called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) that is a natural antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage by preventing the formation of free radicals in the body. These free radicals play a role in aging and many types of diseases. EGCG is one of the most powerful compounds in green tea. Research has tested its ability to help treat various diseases, making it one of the main compounds that gives its medicinal properties.3

Improve Brain Function

In addition, green tea may help to improve brain function because it contains the amino acid L-theanine which can cross the blood-brain barrier and has been shown to increase the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which has anti-anxiety effects. It also increases dopamine and the production of alpha waves in the brain.

Many patients report having more stable energy and being much more productive when they use green tea compared to coffee.

Prevent Brain Aging

Not only can green tea improve brain function in the short term, but it may also protect the brain from aging. Alzheimer’s disease is a common neurodegenerative disease and the most common cause of dementia.4 Several studies show that the catechin compounds in green tea can have various protective effects on neurons in animal models, possibly lowering the risk of dementia.5

Reduce Type 2 Diabetes

The rates of type 2 diabetes are increasing in recent years. The condition now affects about 1 in 10 Americans. Since type 2 diabetes involves having elevated blood sugar levels typically from having insulin resistance, studies show that green tea and moringa may improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.

One study in Japanese individuals found that those who consumed the most green tea had a 42% lower risk of type 2 diabetes. According to a review of 7 studies, green tea consumers had an 18% lower risk of diabetes.6

Live Longer

Finally, green tea and moringa may help you live longer. In one study of over 40,000 Japanese adults over 11 years, those who consumed the most green tea were significantly less likely to die during the study period.7

Bottom Line

The bottom line is that green tea and moringa have a wide range of possible health benefits. To help patients feel better, lose weight, and lower their risk of chronic disease, you may want to consider making green tea and moringa a regular part of their lives.
