National Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month
Sponsored by the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, National Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month is a national observance and annual campaign geared toward raising public awareness of chiropractic care as the preferred first-line approach for safe, effective, drug-free management of low back, neck and neuro-musculoskeletal pain.
The Foundation has developed a Marketing Roadmap to assist the leadership of the State Associations and walk the individual doctor in practice through a step-by-step September marketing plan.
You can observe and promote National Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month at your local level by utilizing the Foundation material found in the roadmap: press releases, advertisements, infographics, PowerPoint presentations, patient handouts and more.
The Foundation is also placing half-page advertisements in Wall Street Journal and USA Today during the month of September, as well as a full-page color ad in Prevention magazine (see below).
Passing Your September Proclamation
A proclamation is a public announcement made by government officials on a topic of great importance to the community.
Contact local legislative body (Board Supervisor or City Council) requesting a Proclamation for the month of September.

Requesting a proclamation in honor of National Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month further communicates the value of safe, effective, drug-free care, including chiropractic, as a first-line approach to manage pain prior to the utilization of prescription and over-the-counter pain medications.
In Ohio this year, September has already been deemed Drug-Free Pain Management Month.
We look forward to receiving updates from our State Associations as additional proclamations are passed this year.
Last year during the month of September, the following State Chiropractic Associations assisted in the passage of proclamations within their states:
– North Carolina Chiropractic Association
– Michigan Association of Chiropractors
– Iowa Chiropractic Society
– Ohio District 14
– Chiropractic Council of Guam
If a proclamation is set forth in your state, be sure to write a thank-you letter to the government official(s) who made it possible.
National Billboard Advertising
For the first time in history, the Foundation – along with a number of Group Member State Associations – is taking its message to the streets in the form of billboard advertising.
Just in time for Florida Chiropractic Association’s The National this year, the Foundation placed its first billboard in Orlando, Fla., with the message “Back Pain? See Your Chiropractor.” The URL www.yes2chiropractic.org appears as the call-to-action, directing consumers to the Foundation’s National Find-A-Doctor Directory.
Members of the Foundation receive a listing in this Directory, having their practice and contact information display when a patient searches for a local doctor of chiropractic.
During the month of September, five additional billboards now appear in high-traffic locations in Austin, Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; Los Angeles, California; Detroit, Michigan; and Des Moines, Iowa.
In total, these six billboards, spread out throughout the U.S., have the potential to reach nearly 8 million individuals.
