Scholarship program lets Olympic Athletes serve as Ambassadors for Chiropractic
It’s not uncommon for Olympic athletes to be chiropractic patients. But a scholarship program through the Federation of International Sport is helping a number of them become chiropractic doctors!
In the video linked below, Dr. Jay Greenstein interviews Olympic athlete and Doctor of Chiropractic Melissa Hoar. Dr. Greenstein is chairman of the World Olympic Scholarship Program (WOSP) for the Federation of International Sport. Melissa is an athlete who participated in the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. After completing her Olympic career, she applied for and received a scholarship to Palmer West.
FICS Olympians Scholarship Program
More about the World Olympians Scholarship Program
In the spirit of the Olympic Movement – and in partnership with ten of our Chiropractic Institutions – the FICS supports education for Olympians worldwide by providing the “World Olympian Scholarship Program.” The program is designed to benefit Olympians who are academically qualified and interested in pursuing a career in Chiropractic.
Olympians selected for this program will serve as an Ambassador for the Olympic Movement. They will also advocate for Chiropractic by sharing their personal story of how the profession fundamentally enhanced their athletic pursuits.
Currently, there are 10 schools participating in this program: nine in the US and one in Canada. (To date, six schools have signed a memorandum of understanding with FICS and a participating Olympian.) All the schools offer a full academic scholarship, with the exception of the school in Canada, which offers a half scholarship. The FICS will continue to approach additional chiropractic institutions to join the 10 schools now providing scholarships.
To date, a number of Olympians have graduated and now are seeing patients that include athletes and Olympians. Those graduating are from Jamaica, Australia, Canada and the US. Additional potential candidates wishing to enter the program are from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe.
