The National Research Centre for Working Environment in Copenhagen, Denmark conducted a study comparing the efficacy of Biofreeze to a menthol-scented placebo gel. The subjects were workers who suffered from chronic pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.
Participants in the triple-blind study reported that Biofreeze reduced their hand and wrist pain by 31%. Researchers measured the participants’ pain one, two, and three hours post application. Results indicated that the pain relief lasted beyond the perceived cooling effect on the skin, at least three hours.
The lead researcher, an expert on musculoskeletal disorders, concluded, “Using Biofreeze to acutely reduce the pain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome may also help facilitate therapeutic exercise or other interventions such as physical or occupational therapy.” In other words, Biofreeze can make therapeutic exercise easier, which in turn can lead to less pain.
Though the focus of this study was carpal tunnel syndrome, Biofreeze is an effective pain reliever for many other ailments including:
- Muscles strains and sprains
- Shoulder and arm discomfort
- Neck, hip and leg pain
- Joint pain
- Ankle and foot pain
- Sports injuries
How Does Biofreeze Stop Pain?
The Menthol in Biofreeze creates a natural cooling sensation that overrides pain signals headed for the brain. Pain is stopped in its tracks and, as shown in the Denmark study above, the relief lasts even after the cooling sensation fades.
Beyond treating pain, here are some additional ways healthcare professionals and athletic trainers use Biofreeze:
- As an aid in physical rehab
- As a muscle relaxant
- In conjunction with massage
- Pre- and post-workout
- Combined with ice; athletes have been known to combine Biofreeze with water and freeze the mixture in a paper cup. They then apply the frozen mixture to the painful area for instant and ongoing relief.

I use Biofreeze for the vast majority of musculoskeletal problems our practices treats. We know it works for all patients, from Olympic athletes to weekend warriors, when the goal is to reduce or eliminate pain and promote optimal function. Our rehab patients, many of whom have a strong likelihood of post-rehab muscle soreness, go home with Biofreeze, which provides them the security of knowing that they have a great product to reduce their symptoms and improve their level of function. Biofreeze works great with all treatment modalities and is an integral part of our treatment planning. We feel it has tremendous clinical and professional benefits, and it basically sells itself, which provides a steady additional revenue stream.
