Dr. Helma received his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from National University of Health Sciences in 1989. Shortly after, he obtained his Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician and Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP) post graduate degrees. He maintains a private practice in Cooper City, Florida, where he has been team and sideline physician for 2 local high schools for over 25 years working with football, lacrosse, baseball, wrestling, and others. Dr. Helma sits on the Florida High School Athletic Association, Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and its Concussion Sub-committee. He has been a Board member, treasurer, and president of the ACBSP. As chiropractic physician for professional surfing’s World Championship Tour, he has traveled to Japan, Australia, Fiji, Brazil, France, Portugal, South Africa and Spain. Dr. Helma has also worked with both men’s and women’s professional beach volleyball all throughout the U.S. and rodeo in Florida and Las Vegas. In addition to his Diplomate status in sports injuries, Dr. Helma is a Certified Foundation Training Instructor. He also holds certification in Graston Technique, CPR and has been the recipient of the ACBSP’s Sports Chiropractor of the year. Dr. Helma has published papers on weight loss in wrestling, pre participation examinations, and volleyball injuries. His paper, “A Multidisciplinary Approach to Treatment of Intersection Syndrome in a Professional Beach Volleyball Player”, presented at the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians Sports Sciences Symposium, Los Angeles, won the John Nash award for best multidisciplinary paper and Robert C. Reed award for best overall paper.
