The Professional Baseball Chiropractic Society recently conducted their 3rd annual PBCS Seminar and Workshop in Tampa, Florida. The event took place over 3 days and was hosted by the New York Yankees at their beautiful spring training stadium, George M. Steinbrenner Field as well as the Laser Spine Institute at their brand-new facility that was built last year.
One of the primary missions of the PBCS has been in the area of education. We have been very fortunate over the past few years to be able to hold our annual seminar at some of the most beautiful spring training facilities that host teams in Major League Baseball. Not only are we able to bring in some top-notch speakers and presenters, but we’ve been able to do it in a baseball atmosphere. Nearly half of the organizations in Major League Baseball were represented when we met in Tampa.
Our seminar this year began at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Friday. It was kicked off by Ron Porterfield, the Head Athletic Trainer of the Tampa Bay Rays. Ron spoke of the Athletic Trainer/Team Chiropractor relationship and the importance of communication in the training room. He spoke of how he and Dr. Chris Williams, Team Chiropractor of the Tampa Bay Rays, have open lines of communication between each other and will often times discuss the treatment of a player collectively in order to provide the most effective outcome for a player. Former MLB pitcher, Andy McGaffigan, spoke to the attendees on how chiropractic was a major tool he used during his MLB playing career. Andy reflected on a period of time when chiropractic was “taboo” in professional baseball. He also had some great stories of some of the players he played with and against. We then closed out the day with a taping presentation by Keith J. Cronin, DPT, OCS, CSCS of Dynamic Tape. Keith demonstrated the taping protocols geared towards functional movement of both the upper and lower extremities. This was a hands-on presentation and the attendees left with a certification in Biomechanical Taping for Movement Control from Dynamic Tape too!
The final day of the seminar was hosted by the Laser Spine Institute at their amazing new facility that was just constructed in 2016. This included a breakfast and lunch provided by LSI and a behind the scenes tour of their facility. The lectures began with Dr. Anthony Gross. Dr. Gross is a consult chiropractor at the Laser Spine Institute’s Scottsdale, Arizona facility. Dr. Gross presented on MRI findings that would be consistent with patients who would be possible candidates for surgery and developing a better clinical understanding of traditional and minimally-invasive spine surgical procedures. The day concluded with Dr. Jeffrey Langmaid. Dr. Langmaid is a consult chiropractor at the Laser Spine Institute’s headquarters in Tampa, Florida and is also the founder of The Evidence Based Chiropractor. Dr. Langmaid presented on what DCs need to know about post-surgical spine rehabilitation and specific post-surgical spine rehabilitation protocols.
There were two award presentations this year too. Dr. Alan Palmer (Arizona Diamondbacks Team Chiropractor and Asst. Director PBCS) was awarded the annual PBCS Lifetime Achievement Award and Joe Torre (Former MLB Manager and MLB Chief Baseball Officer) was awarded the Visionary Award. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given annual to a chiropractor who has demonstrated leadership within chiropractic, specifically with regards to sports chiropractic and/or baseball. The Visionary Award is given annually to an individual outside of chiropractic who has been instrumental in bridging the gap between chiropractic and another field or sport, specifically within professional baseball.
Overall, the seminar was again and overwhelming success and one in which we hope will spring-board us into 2017.
